It’s December and almost time to head to Kenton-on-Sea and Boesmansriviermond for a few weeks of relaxation! We thought we’d share a list of child-friendly activities to enjoy while in Kenton and Boesmans with your children.

THINGS TO DO IN KENTON & BOESMANS

The Rivers

The Kariega & Boesmans rivers are safe for families with young children as there are no waves and lots of shallow water for the kids to play.
The rivers are both tidal, so we’d suggest that you enjoy the incoming tide by floating down river on a tube, pool noodle or inflatable toy boat.
Both rivers are also ideal for kayaks, SUPs, fishing, boating and skiing (for the older kids).

Beach walks

An early morning or late afternoon beach walk with the kids is always a favourite. There are many beaches to explore with beautiful rocky outcrops and interesting formations to enjoy. When walking between Middle Beach and Shelley Bay, keep an eye out for Carriage Rock. Best is to walk during low tide, where there are many rock pools and shells along the wide open beaches. For those feeling more energetic we’d highly recommend the 2,5km walk to Kwaaihoek from the Boesmans sea parking near the river mouth. Pack a snack and water to enjoy during your walk.

Sandboarding

The dunes are ideal for sandboarding and the kids love it! Sandboards are for sale at the hardware stores and beach stores in Kenton and Boesmans. Remember to take a candle stick with to rub on the bottom of the boards after every ride. A helpful tip is to use a swimming mask to keep the sand out of the eyes. Take water with as the dune climbing can be tiring (but loads of fun)!

Canoeing

Kids love a canoeing trip on the calm rivers. The scenery is spectacular and the birdlife is prolific. Remember to wear life jackets and sunscreen.

Fatbike rides

The wide open beaches are perfect for fatbike rides. If you don’t have your own, rent a fatbike from Woodlands Cottages. They will drop off and pick up the bikes at the beach if you can’t fetch them at Woodlands.

Suggested beach rides:
– Kariega to Middle beach
– Boesmans river mouth to Kwaaihoek

Township Tours

Take the family on a cultural experience that is fun and insightful. The Aloes Tour Company is operated by a group of young men and women based in Ekuphumleni near Kenton-on-Sea. Let them share the love for their neighbourhood, its challenges and beauty. Meet the friendly locals, enjoy a tasty meal and listen to the interesting stories.

Beach Horse Rides

Beachcomber Horse Trails offer beach rides on the vast, outstretched beaches of the Sunshine Coast. The beach rides take you along the beautiful beaches of this spectacular coastline. It’s the ideal horse ride for riders of all experience levels. You can join a scheduled beach ride or book your own.

Day Trip Safari

Explore the beauty of Sibuya Game Reserve on a day excursion, discovering Africa’s fascinating wildlife. Sibuya Game Reserve incorporates the unique East Cape Valley Bushveld, Grasslands and Coastal Forests. Antelope abound, including the rare Bontebok and Oribi. Elephants, Giraffe and Zebra silhouetted against an Indian Ocean backdrop complete a truly memorable picture.
