The timeless South African seaside holiday
Boknesstrand (Boknes)
Boknesstrand, simply called Boknes by locals, is a charming seaside village located just east of its neighbour, Cannon Rocks. Although the two villages blend seamlessly along the coastline, Boknes has a unique personality, beloved for its laid-back, family-oriented atmosphere.
What to Do
- Swim: Boknesstrand is known as one of the safest swimming beaches along the Sunshine Coast, perfect for families with young children. Boknes River is a blind river (it doesn’t have a mouth!) and features a delightful lagoon, creating calm, shallow pools at low tide. Pack a picnic, pitch a gazebo on the soft sand, and spend leisurely days swimming and relaxing.
- Hike to Dias Cross: Boknesstrand marks the eastern starting point of the scenic Dias Cross Trail, a beloved coastal hike. The leisurely four-kilometre walk eastward takes you along pristine beaches towards the historic Dias Cross monument, erected in honour of the Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Dias. The hike from Boknes is shorter and gentler compared to the Cannon Rocks route, making it extremely popular, especially during the holiday seasons. Families traditionally undertake the walk at sunrise or late afternoon, enjoying cooler temperatures, spectacular ocean views, and photo opportunities atop rocky outcrops around the monument.
- Fishing and snorkelling: The Boknes coastline, rich in marine biodiversity, draws avid anglers and snorkellers alike. Quiet rock pools and gullies around Boknes provide excellent snorkelling opportunities on calm days, with colourful marine life thriving among rocky formations. Anglers frequent the beaches, casting their lines from shore or rocky points near Kwaaihoek. Species like kob, steenbras, and galjoen are common catches, especially at sunrise or sunset. Whether you’re fishing or exploring beneath the surface, the pristine waters promise rewarding encounters.
- 4×4 adventures: Outdoor enthusiasts will love exploring the sandy tracks and inland 4×4 trails on the Golden Mile, towards the Woody Cape area. These trails often lead to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the ocean, dense dune forests, and undulating coastal terrain. For safety and guidance, consider joining locals familiar with these backroads.
- Birdwatching: You might spot the distinctive African black oystercatcher, with its vivid red beak against sleek black feathers, or watch kingfishers and elegant egrets hunting in the shallows. As twilight falls, listen for the haunting call of the fiery-necked nightjar or watch water dikkops running swiftly across the sandy flats.
Where to Eat
- Boknes Padstal (Farm Stall): A beloved combination of farm stall, café, and local convenience store, it’s renowned for its hearty farm-style breakfasts and fresh roosterkoek sandwiches filled with cheese and tomato. This friendly pit stop also stocks picnic essentials, biltong, snacks, and soft-serve ice creams!
- Beach Kiosk: During peak holiday seasons, a small beach kiosk opens near Boknes’ main beach, selling simple fare like cold drinks, chips, and ice lollies – perfect fuel for a day in the sun. It’s a nostalgic, informal addition to the relaxed seaside atmosphere of Boknes.
