When you think of Kenton on Sea, you invoke a vision of beaches as far as the eye can see, unspoilt by time and consumerism, where two rivers meet and run into the Indian Ocean. Midway between Port Elizabeth and East London, Kenton On Sea is where the sun is rumoured to spend the winter months.
One of the most picturesque resorts in the country, Kenton on Sea lies between the mouths of the rivers Boesmans and Kariega so that it is hedged on three sides by river and sea. The area offers the nature lover and eco-tourist alike a place to relax and unwind in a safe environment. Both tidal rivers have an abundant bird and fish life and are safe for swimming and other water sports. Whales too make this their home and Kenton on Sea has whale families that return every year to visit.
The two rivers are both navigable and a trip upriver promises a rich bird viewing opportunity – including the vivid sunbird and fish eagle. The Kariega beach was voted the best beach in South Africa in 2000 and you would be hard pushed to find such beauty and serenity elsewhere. There are undulating sand dunes, fascinating rock formations and rock pools to delight the child in everyone.
Only 10 to 15 minutes drive inland provides those wanting the true African game experience the opportunity of staying at a number of game reserves, including Kariega Game Reserve, Sibuya, Shamwari and Lalibela Game Reserve. The area is malaria free and the game reserves are well stocked with game, some of which boast the Big Five.
Nearest places to visit include Grahamstown, famous for its National Arts Festival – the largest of its kind and second only to the Edinburgh Festival – and Bathurst, a small farming village which has become a haven for local artists.
Here you can buy their crafts and art or attend the annual ‘oxbraai’ – an all day event. Other local activities include: all types of water sports, hiking trails, mountain biking, township tours, horse back beach trails and deep sea fishing.
An oasis of adventure, leisure, arts and culture, culinary arts and more can be discovered throughout Kenton, Boesmans, and surrounds.
